A quiet Boston neighborhood is on edge after an 18-year-old was charged in a shocking daytime robbery targeting an elderly woman.

Davonte Jordan appeared in court Thursday, accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint in Charlestown just a day earlier. Police say the incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Adams Street and Mt. Vernon Street.

According to investigators, the victim was approached from behind by two masked suspects. One of them allegedly pointed a gun while they grabbed her purse and took off running.

For longtime residents, the crime felt completely out of place.

“I just can’t believe it,” said one neighbor. “I’ve never heard of something like this happening here—day or night.”

Others said the area used to struggle with crime years ago, but things had improved significantly after a nearby police station was built.

“We got comfortable,” one resident admitted. “We let our guard down.”

The case quickly moved forward thanks to neighbors who stepped in to help.

Police say one person spotted the suspects and pointed officers in the right direction, while another neighbor found the victim’s purse in her backyard. That same neighbor later located the victim and stayed with her until help arrived.

“That’s how it is here,” one local said. “People look out for each other.”

Officers later spotted Jordan and a 14-year-old boy near Monument Street. Both tried to run but were eventually caught.

While police say no weapon was recovered, the victim’s credit card was allegedly found on one of the suspects during a search.

Jordan’s arrest comes just months after he was previously charged in January for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Now, both he and the juvenile suspect are facing multiple charges, including armed robbery of an elderly person.
