A New Mexico community is reeling after a domestic dispute turned into a nightmare that left a 4-year-old boy dead and his mother and baby brother fighting for their lives.

Authorities say 41-year-old Luis Sanchez was arrested Tuesday, Feb. 17, after allegedly opening fire inside a home in Tijeras during an early-morning argument with his wife. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office charged him with multiple felonies, including intentional child abuse resulting in death and aggravated battery against a household member resulting in great bodily harm.

Deputies responded around 1:18 a.m. after Sanchez’s wife called 911 and reported that he was armed with a handgun. While officers were on their way, dispatchers were told that shots had been fired inside the home.

When first responders arrived, they found Sanchez outside the residence. According to a criminal complaint cited by local outlet ABQ Raw, Sanchez allegedly exited the house naked and shouted, “I killed her. She’s a lawyer and I killed this bitch.”

Authorities say he was uncooperative and was taken into custody after deputies deployed a Taser.

Inside the home, deputies discovered a devastating scene. A 4-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy’s mother and her 1-year-old son were rushed to a nearby hospital, where both were listed in critical condition.

Officials have not publicly identified the woman, but confirmed she works as an assistant district attorney with the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff John Allen described the aftermath as “one of the most horrific scenes our deputies and first responders will ever walk into.”

During a press conference later that day, Allen also spoke about the chilling 911 call.

“I would say this is probably the most difficult 911 call that I ever heard in my career,” Allen told reporters. “It’s pretty difficult to listen to and hear people suffering and people in the process of dying. But I will tell you this, this doesn’t come out a lot.”

According to investigators, the woman told dispatchers she had been asleep when Sanchez woke her. He allegedly accused her of cheating and argued about intimacy in their marriage before opening fire.

Officials said Sanchez had no prior criminal record, and there were no previous reports of domestic violence at the home. It remains unclear whether the two children were his biological children or stepchildren.

Sanchez is currently being held without bond at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Feb. 25.

As of now, it’s unclear whether he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
