A Georgia mother is in jail after her 7-month-old baby died when left inside a hot car at the dealership where she worked.
Nyla Simmons, 22, now faces charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to a child, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation on October 16, after Simmons drove the unresponsive infant from Kia Automotive Dealership on Ledo Road in Albany to a local hospital. Tragically, the baby, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead.
According to local news outlets, Simmons left the baby in the car while she went to work. She later discovered the child unresponsive and rushed to the hospital. The coroner performed an autopsy the following day, but the results have not yet been made public.
Coroner Michael Fowler told WALB that final findings could take time. “If there is not any trauma to the child or injuries to the child, then a lot of time, you got to wait on [toxicology] and the histology, all of that, to come in and see what happened,” he said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI investigate the incident, and Simmons was arrested on November 3. While the exact amount of time the infant was left in the car is unknown, temperatures in Albany reportedly reached 88 degrees that day.
Simmons remains in Lee County Jail as the investigation continues.
