An 84-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a tragic hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy in Australia.

Victoria Police said the incident occurred on March 27 in Teesdale, when the boy, identified as Caleb Wesley, was walking to school with his two siblings, ages 9 and 12. The collision happened just after 8 a.m. on Bannockburn-Shelford Road. Sadly, Caleb was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the vehicle fled but was later found at an address in Teesdale. The 84-year-old woman involved has been charged with failing to stop, failing to render assistance, and failing to report a collision. She has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Nov. 28.

Caleb was a student at Covenant College in Victoria. The school’s principal, Joshua McEwen, described him as “always one of the first to show kindness to others” and said the school community is “devastated” by his death. “Thank you to all who are praying for Caleb’s family and our school,” McEwen added. “Our prayers are also for the many others impacted, including those who witnessed this tragedy, those who assisted at the scene, as well as the driver and her family.”
