An Illinois woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing her longtime boyfriend, a retired police chief, and hiding his body in a storage unit.

Marcy Oglesby, 53, was sentenced Monday, October 27, in connection with the 2021 death of Richard “Rick” Young, the former Maquon Police Chief, according to local news outlets KWQC, WMBD, and WQAD.

Oglesby was convicted in June of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery by administering a dangerous substance, Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley Worby said.

Prosecutors said Oglesby poisoned Young over several months starting in the summer of 2021, using eye drops in his food and drinks. The poisoning continued until Young died on November 1, 2021, according to Worby. Oglesby then hid his body in a storage unit across the street from their shared home.

Young’s remains were discovered nearly a year later, on October 7, 2022, in an advanced state of decomposition.

Worby described Young, affectionately known in his community as “Rick the Cop,” as a devoted public servant who always lent a hand, whether to neighbors, family members, or even stray animals. Known for his skill in repairing and building, Young approached every task with precision and pride.

During her trial, Oglesby claimed she did not kill Young and alleged that she had been in a two-decade-long relationship with him against her will.

Friends of Young expressed relief that justice had been served. “It gives us peace knowing that justice was served, and that even though Rick couldn’t be here himself, we were able to be his voice, and his voice was heard,” said Natalie Mason in a victim impact statement.

Young was 71 when he died and is survived by three sons and five grandchildren.
