A Thanksgiving celebration in Beach Park, Illinois, took a frightening turn when a 21-year-old man allegedly set his bedroom on fire following a heated family argument, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were first called to the home about an hour before the blaze. Family members reported that Erik J. Crump had been “antagonizing and arguing with others in the home,” creating rising tension on a day usually reserved for family gatherings. According to investigators, the situation escalated when relatives told Crump he would be kicked out of the home due to his behavior.

Authorities say Crump briefly left the residence, but returned shortly afterward and went straight to his bedroom. That’s when investigators believe he used an accelerant to intentionally set the room on fire. Moments later, family members noticed smoke filling the home and quickly evacuated. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the bedroom and prompted a large emergency response.

Witnesses told deputies they saw Crump running from the home in the 40100 block of North Lone Oak Road as the fire spread. A sheriff’s K-9 unit was called in to track him and traced his scent across town to a storage facility in the 39400 block of North Lewis Avenue. Crump was found hiding inside the facility and was arrested without incident.

He is now facing two felony charges: aggravated arson and residential arson. Officials say these charges reflect both the intentional nature of the fire and the risk posed to the occupants inside the home at the time.

Crump is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning. The sheriff’s office has not released additional details about the extent of the damage or whether the home remains habitable, but the investigation is ongoing.
