Police in Cleveland are investigating a disturbing case after the bodies of two young girls were discovered stuffed inside suitcases and buried in shallow graves.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd confirmed during a press conference Tuesday that the bodies were found Monday evening in a residential area near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue.

According to investigators, someone walking their dog in a nearby field around 6 p.m. noticed what appeared to be a body inside a suitcase and immediately contacted police.

When officers arrived near Ginn Academy, they discovered one of the victims buried in a shallow grave with her body inside a suitcase. After searching the surrounding area, investigators found a second shallow grave containing another suitcase with a body inside.

Police believe one of the victims is between 8 and 13 years old, while the other appears to be between 10 and 14 years old. As of Tuesday night, neither girl had been identified.

“This is a priority,” Todd said during the press conference. “This is a traumatic event for our officers, for the community, and this is just such a tragic incident, but we are trying to develop any leads we can.”

Investigators say there are currently no active missing persons reports in Cleveland that match the descriptions of the two girls.

The bodies have been taken to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, where officials will work to determine their identities and the cause of death.

Police also believe the bodies had been there for some time.

“It was some time, so it’s not something that was recent,” Todd said.

The discovery has shocked residents in the quiet neighborhood where the suitcases were found.

“This is a field close to the school over there,” Todd said. “This is just a residential neighborhood that I’m sure a lot of people frequent.”

At this point, investigators say there are no suspects.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area or who may have information related to the case to contact Cleveland police.

“Usually in residential areas, you know what’s happening in your neighborhood. Something just seems a little bit off,” Todd said. “That’s why we’re asking anyone who believes they may have information or noticed something suspicious to give us a call.”
