Nathan Norrell (Dallas County Sheriff's Office)

A disturbing family dispute in Iowa turned violent when a 21-year-old man allegedly attacked his own mother with a knife after an argument over a speaker.

Police in West Des Moines say officers were called to a home in the 6300 block of Center Street around 7:28 p.m. on February 28 after receiving reports of a stabbing.

When officers arrived, they found an adult woman suffering from injuries. Police provided emergency medical care until paramedics arrived and transported her to a nearby hospital. Authorities said her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police later arrested 21-year-old Nathan Norrell in connection with the attack. He has been charged with attempted murder and going armed with intent, according to jail records. Norrell is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail on $750,000 bail.

Investigators say the victim knew the suspect and that the incident was not random.

According to court documents, the victim is Norrell’s mother.

Authorities say Norrell had been drinking at the family home when he asked his mother if he could use a speaker located in the home’s primary bathroom. She reportedly refused.

Later, when the woman entered the bathroom, investigators say Norrell was hiding behind the door and allegedly attacked her with a large fixed-blade knife.

The woman suffered a serious wound to her neck and several defensive injuries to her hands while trying to protect herself, according to the criminal complaint.

After the attack, police say Norrell followed his mother into the kitchen as she attempted to treat her injuries. When she called 911, he reportedly fled the home.

Investigators say Norrell then called an Uber and traveled to his grandfather’s house, where he later surrendered to authorities.

When questioned by police, Norrell allegedly told investigators he had blacked out due to alcohol and medication and could not remember what had happened.

Court documents also revealed that the victim told officers she feared for her life during the attack and believed her son was trying to kill her.

She also reportedly told police that about two weeks earlier, she had found Norrell passed out in a bedroom with a knife beside him.

West Des Moines police say the investigation remains ongoing but there is no indication that anyone else was involved.

According to court records, Norrell also has two other pending cases in Dallas County filed in December 2025. Those charges include interference with official acts, public intoxication, and attempted burglary in the first degree.

The latest charges against Norrell — attempted murder and going armed with intent — carry serious felony penalties under Iowa law.
