A father and his teenage daughter were found shot to death in Mississippi after reportedly leaving home to meet someone they connected with on Facebook Marketplace.
Victor Gonzalez, 42, and his 19-year-old daughter Serenity Gonzalez, both from Memphis, Tennessee, were discovered dead Sunday morning in what authorities believe is a homicide.
According to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 7 a.m. after receiving a report about a possible single-vehicle crash along a remote gravel road in Sardis, Mississippi — about 50 miles south of Memphis.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the father and daughter dead inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
Family members say the pair had left home on February 28 after arranging to meet someone selling a PlayStation 5 console on Facebook Marketplace.
But they never returned.
Victor Gonzalez’s 15-year-old son, Jessie Waterman, spoke with local media about the heartbreaking situation and what he believes may have happened.
Waterman told reporters that his father and sister had planned to buy the gaming console and were heading to meet the seller when something went terribly wrong.
He suspects the situation may have been a setup.
“Something must’ve happened with the transaction,” Waterman said, suggesting it could have been a scam.
Waterman also believes the pair may have tried to escape during the encounter.
Based on the condition of the scene, he told reporters it appeared his father may have attempted to drive away.
“They were trying to flee based on the tracks on the road and the mud on the side of the van,” he said.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine exactly what happened during the meeting.
