A woman in Alabama has admitted to killing her elderly neighbor just days before she was scheduled to go on trial for the crime.

Monyuett Catrice Hinson, 29, pleaded guilty on February 27 to felony murder in connection with the death of 76-year-old Alverner Blanks in Bessemer, Alabama.

Prosecutors originally charged Hinson with capital murder in November 2021, but the case took a turn after she accepted a plea deal shortly before her trial was set to begin.

According to authorities, the deadly incident happened on September 8, 2021, during a dispute between the two neighbors outside their homes.

Police say the argument was reportedly related to money.

During the confrontation, investigators say Hinson attacked Blanks with a space heater, striking him in the head. The violent blow caused severe injuries, and Blanks later died weeks afterward.

After the attack, police say Hinson fled the scene.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later ruled Blanks’ death a homicide, leading prosecutors to pursue the more serious capital murder charge.

But with the trial approaching, Hinson chose to plead guilty to felony murder instead. The plea deal was accepted by the victim’s family and approved in court by Circuit Judge David Carpenter in Alabama’s 10th Judicial Circuit Court.

As part of the agreement, Hinson now faces a potential sentence of up to 24 years in prison.
