A late-night trip to a Florida Walgreens turned into a deadly nightmare — and investigators say it was all fueled by jealousy.

Christian Barrios, 32, is now sitting behind bars facing a long list of charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, after a violent shooting that left two people dead in a parking lot in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Authorities say the victims — 46-year-old Melissa Wood and 42-year-old Jason Chatham — were gunned down around 10:30 p.m. on March 13 along the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, a busy stretch just outside Jacksonville.

Deputies rushed to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire outside the Walgreens on Palm Valley Road. Both victims were transported to nearby hospitals, but neither survived.

What led up to the shooting is just as chilling.

Investigators believe the attack was driven by romantic jealousy. According to an arrest warrant, Barrios suspected Wood of being involved with another man and set out to confront her.

In a disturbing twist, police say Barrios’ own mother drove him to the location. She later told deputies he was sitting in the back seat and suddenly jumped out of the car when he spotted Wood’s vehicle. Moments later, she heard a barrage of gunshots and called 911.

St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick didn’t hold back when describing the suspect.

“He is out of prison again on probation, committing another violent felony,” the sheriff said. “Now families are left mourning two people who were shot and killed in a parking lot over a domestic situation.”

After the shooting, Barrios allegedly took off, triggering a massive manhunt. K-9 units tracked him through the area, including onto a nearby golf course owned by the PGA Tour.

But the chaos didn’t end there.

Authorities say Barrios fled to Nassau County, where he allegedly stole a BMW, crashed it, and then tried to escape on foot into the woods before finally being captured.

Loved ones of the victims are now speaking out, painting a heartbreaking picture of the lives lost.

Wood’s brother described her as a kind and selfless person who “would help a stranger even if she wasn’t in a place to do so.” She leaves behind two children and had recently become a grandmother.

Her daughter pushed back on claims of infidelity, saying her mother simply had “a lot of love to give” and may have been trying to help Barrios — not betray him.

Chatham’s family is also grieving deeply. His niece shared an emotional tribute, remembering late-night adventures and promising to keep his memory alive.

Now, two families are left shattered — and what investigators say was a jealous rage has turned into a double homicide that’s sending shockwaves through the community.
