A Georgia woman is living through every spouse’s worst nightmare after watching her husband get gunned down—allegedly by someone he once called a friend.
Police say the shooting happened the night of March 13 in Waycross, Georgia. Officers responded to a 911 call around 8:22 p.m. near Snelson Street, where they found 35-year-old Jacob Garrett Cothern suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Not long after, officers say they spotted a suspect nearby trying to flee while still armed. That man, identified as 29-year-old Brandon Dale Frick, was taken into custody.
Frick is now facing serious charges, including malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, along with a misdemeanor charge related to discharging a weapon near a public roadway.
But what allegedly led up to the shooting is even more disturbing.
According to Jacob’s wife, Buffy Cothern, the couple had been giving Frick—a childhood friend of her husband’s—a ride that night.
During the drive, she claims Frick made her uncomfortable by touching her arm inappropriately. That’s when things escalated.
Buffy says she pulled the car over, and her husband immediately told Frick to get out, making it clear they would not continue the ride after what had happened.
Seconds later, everything turned violent.
“Brandon pulled a gun,” she recalled, alleging that Frick shot her husband as she watched in horror.
Jacob collapsed to the ground, but the nightmare wasn’t over.
Buffy claims Frick then told him to get up and take him home.
Despite being shot, Jacob reportedly tried to de-escalate the situation, pleading with his friend.
“No, Brandon, please stop. We don’t have to do it like this,” he said, according to Buffy.
But she says when Frick realized Jacob couldn’t get up, he fired again.
Then, in a chilling moment, she alleges the suspect simply put the gun away and walked off—showing no remorse.
Frick remains behind bars as he awaits his next court appearance. It’s unclear if he has obtained legal representation.
Meanwhile, Buffy is left grieving the man she married just last year—and trying to make sense of a tragedy that unfolded in seconds, right in front of her eyes.
