An Oklahoma man will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars after admitting he strangled his wife during a heated argument that turned deadly.

Court records show that 51-year-old Clifton Wayne Hampton was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, Christina Hampton. The sentence was handed down by Lara M Russell after Hampton pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Under Oklahoma law, a life sentence equals 45 years, and Hampton must serve at least 85% of that time — meaning he won’t be eligible for parole for more than 38 years.

The case stems from a disturbing series of events in October 2025, when authorities were called to a hospital in Vinita for what was initially reported as a suspicious death. When deputies arrived, they found Christina with visible injuries, including trauma to her face, knees, and throat.

Investigators quickly became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in Hampton’s story.

At first, he claimed the two had argued about their marriage and went for a drive, saying his wife somehow ended up injured on the roadside. But authorities say that version of events quickly unraveled.

Not long after, Hampton admitted the truth.

Prosecutors say he confessed that after hours of arguing, his wife told him she wanted a divorce and called him “pathetic,” which sent him into a rage. While the two were in bed, he placed his hands around her neck and strangled her.

He later told investigators he “took things too far,” claiming he only meant to “shut her up.”

Authorities say the aftermath was just as disturbing. Hampton admitted to trying to move her body using a tarp and a dolly before ultimately dragging her to a vehicle in an attempt to take her to the hospital.

During sentencing, Christina’s mother delivered an emotional statement, expressing heartbreak and anger over the loss of her daughter just days before her wedding anniversary.
