A YMCA camp counselor was charged with child sexual abuse in California.
Anthony Joseph Ramon of Gilroy, Calif., was arrested and charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl at a YMCA summer day camp held at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center on Thursday, July 9, the Morgan Hill Police Department (MHPD) said in a statement on social media.
MHPD began its investigation on June 30, according to the statement. Police promptly notified the YMCA, which “cooperated with law enforcement throughout the investigation and immediately placed Ramon on leave,” per the statement. The YMCA confirmed that Ramon’s employment began on Aug. 6, 2024, per police.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Ramon on Thursday, and MHPD Detectives took him into custody “without incident,” per the statement. Ramon was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on $100,000 bail for allegedly committing “lewd and lascivious acts on a minor,” according to police.
“The Morgan Hill Police Department encourages parents and guardians to have open conversations with their children about safe touch and inappropriate adult behavior and to report any suspected abuse or unwanted contact to law enforcement immediately,” the statement from MHPD continued.
“The YMCA of Silicon Valley remains committed to providing a safe environment through comprehensive child protection policies, including employee screening, background checks, mandatory child abuse prevention training, supervision standards, and reporting requirements,” police said of the YMCA location where the alleged assault took place.

This kind of cr*p seems to happen quite a lot lately. Maybe it’s just better reporting or something, but regardless, the penalties for child abuse of this nature need to be very, very tough. Children look up to these adults and believe they are in good hands.
