A 20-year-old California man is accused of fatally stabbing his father after he allegedly rushed to protect his mother during a violent family dispute.
John Thomas Powell is being held on suspicion of murder following the deadly confrontation at the family’s Castro Valley home on Saturday, Sept. 5.
According to police, the incident began as a “family disturbance” between Powell’s parents that escalated into a physical altercation.
Investigators said Powell told them he heard his mother in distress and grabbed an “edged weapon” before stabbing his 51-year-old father.
The fight happened at around 1:30 p.m.
Local footage showed Powell being taken into custody outside the home while his father was wheeled away on a stretcher.
The older man was rushed to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
One neighbor, Nora Patterson, said the tragedy has left the neighborhood stunned.
“It’s tragic, you know? He lost his life,” Patterson told KTVU. “And the poor guy was only 20 years old, and he was trying to protect his mom, supposedly.”
Patterson said she also saw Powell’s mother outside the house after the stabbing and described her as visibly shaken.
“She’s between a rock and a hard place right now, I’m sure,” she said.
Another neighbor, Raquel Torres Casillas, said the situation was especially heartbreaking because it involved members of the same family.
“We just feel bad because, you know, it was a family issue,” she said. “It’s sad because it’s a family, you know, breaking up.”
Authorities have not publicly explained what sparked the argument between Powell’s parents.
Police have only described the incident as a family disturbance that turned physical before Powell allegedly intervened.
Powell reportedly told investigators he acted after hearing his mother in distress.
Neighbors said the family had lived at the Castro Valley residence for about a year.
Powell is currently being held without bail as the investigation continues.
