A 50-year-old man was arrested after police say he tried to kidnap a 1-year-old child right out of a shopping cart inside an Oklahoma Walmart.
Tulsa Police were called to the Walmart near 68th Street and Memorial Drive around 5:08 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, after a woman reported that a stranger had taken her child.
According to police, the mother was shopping with her two children when a man later identified as Marshall Dixon approached her and briefly began talking about the kids.
Moments later, investigators say Dixon reached into her shopping cart, picked up her 1-year-old and placed the child into his own cart.
He then allegedly started walking away.
The mother immediately confronted him and was able to grab her child back.
Police said she then rushed both children into a Walmart bathroom, locked the door and called 911.
Store employees also intervened, removed the suspect from the Walmart and contacted authorities.
When officers arrived, they found Dixon sitting at a nearby bus stop.
Police said that when officers questioned him about what had happened inside the store, Dixon allegedly admitted it.
“Yeah, I did that,” he reportedly told police.
Dixon was taken into custody and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping.
Tulsa Police later shared surveillance images and body-camera footage connected to the arrest.
The woman and her children were not reported injured.
Police have not publicly said what may have motivated the alleged kidnapping attempt.
The investigation remains ongoing.
