A Kentucky community is mourning after a 30-year-old state trooper and father of three was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 65.
Trooper Hayden Phillips was killed Monday afternoon after pulling over a vehicle in Warren County, according to Kentucky State Police. Phillips had served with the agency for about three years and was assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green.
Authorities said Phillips stopped a bluish-gray Honda Civic carrying a temporary Alabama tag when he was shot. The vehicle then fled the scene, triggering a large-scale manhunt and a statewide Blue Alert.
The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Emonnie Branch of Portland, Tennessee.
Branch was captured later that day in the Louisville area, roughly 90 miles from the shooting scene. Louisville Metro Police reportedly used a vehicle grappler device to help stop the car before taking him into custody. He has since been charged with first-degree murder of a first responder or peace officer and is expected to be returned to Warren County to face the case.
Investigators have not publicly released what prompted the traffic stop or a detailed account of what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.
Phillips was remembered as far more than a state trooper.
Before joining Kentucky State Police in 2023, he had also served his community as a police officer, firefighter and paramedic. He leaves behind his wife and three young children.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear called Phillips a hero who had dedicated himself to protecting the commonwealth and asked residents to keep his family in their prayers.
At a news conference, U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner described the killing as one of the most serious crimes imaginable, noting that Phillips’ wife had expected her husband to come home and that his three sons are now without their father.
Those who worked alongside Phillips were also struggling with the loss.
“Hayden was our brother,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Katan Parker said while speaking about the fallen officer. Parker described Phillips as someone special who would be deeply missed by his fellow troopers.
Tributes began appearing almost immediately.
Outside the Kentucky State Police post in Bowling Green, mourners placed flowers, photographs, a teddy bear and an American flag. Candles were arranged to spell out the word “HERO.”
More than 100 first responders also reportedly gathered Monday evening at the Russell Springs Fire Department to honor Phillips.
On Tuesday, law enforcement planned a procession to escort Phillips through Glasgow, his hometown, to a funeral home. Police temporarily closed part of Happy Valley Road so officers and members of the community could safely pay their respects.
The timing made the tragedy especially painful for his family. Phillips was killed just days before his birthday, and his widow publicly remembered him as her best friend.
Branch’s prior criminal history has also drawn attention following his arrest. Published reports say he had previously served prison time on fraud-related offenses and had other past charges. Those earlier cases are separate from the new murder charge and do not establish guilt in the trooper’s death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
