A Christian pastor and his wife were shot and killed outside their home in Mexico in a late-night attack that has left two teenagers without their parents and police searching for answers.

Ángel González, 51, and his wife, Irán Montes, 49, were attacked around 1 a.m. Thursday, October 15, in the Villas El Dorado neighborhood of Irapuato, a city in Mexico’s Guanajuato state.

González, who led Calvary Chapel Irapuato, had reportedly officiated at a funeral earlier that evening. The couple was near their garage when a gunman approached their vehicle and opened fire.

According to Mexican newspaper Periódico AM, the attacker stepped out of another vehicle, approached the couple from approximately three feet away, and fired at González before shooting Montes.

González died at the scene. His wife was critically wounded and later died while receiving emergency medical care, according to church officials.

The gunman reportedly fled in a waiting vehicle, prompting a response from municipal police, state authorities, and Mexico’s National Guard.

Officers secured the area as investigators collected evidence and began reconstructing the deadly encounter. Neighbors who heard the gunfire had called emergency services.

Police subsequently detained a 30-year-old man identified in local reports as Edson Ismael “N” during an investigation involving a suspicious vehicle in the Las Rosas neighborhood.

Authorities are examining whether the man had any involvement in the double homicide. His detention does not establish that he participated in the shooting, and investigators have not publicly confirmed any criminal charges directly connecting him to the killings.

The motive remains a mystery.

Calvary Chapel Magazine initially reported that the shooting may have been a robbery that turned deadly. However, Mexican authorities have not confirmed that account, and investigators have not ruled out other possibilities.

There has also been no official finding that the couple was targeted because of their religious work or that organized crime was responsible.

The deaths have devastated the couple’s congregation and their two children, Matthew, 18, and Dorothy, 17.

Calvary Chapel, an evangelical Christian church network founded in California, confirmed the killings and appealed for support for the grieving family.

In a statement, the Irapuato congregation expressed its sorrow over the deaths of its pastor and his wife, thanking the couple for their years of service and asking fellow churches to remember their children in prayer.

The tragedy has also intensified concerns about violent crime in Guanajuato, a central Mexican state that has experienced years of bloodshed involving organized criminal groups.

Irapuato has faced repeated shootings and other violent incidents, with local reporting documenting several additional killings around the time of the couple’s deaths. However, police have not established any connection between those crimes and the attack on González and Montes.

The case has raised fears among residents of Villas El Dorado, where neighbors have called for increased police patrols and stronger security following the killings.

On Saturday, October 17, Calvary Chapel Irapuato announced that funeral services for González and Montes would be held privately at the family’s request. The church cited the spread of false and misleading information about the deaths and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.

The investigation is being handled by the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office, which is responsible for determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether additional suspects were involved.

For now, the most troubling question remains unanswered: Why were a pastor and his wife attacked outside their own home?
