A southwest Florida man will spend life in prison for attempting to murder a sheriff’s deputy.

Travis Rains, 20, was sentenced this week for shooting at Lee County officers during a burglary in September 2020. He was a passenger in a van, and a shootout developed after a chase ended with the van in a ditch.

WBBH-TV reported Rains was found guilty in February of not only attempted second-degree murder, but burglary, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

WINK-TV reported in 2020 that a deputy’s patrol car received several bullet marks, but no law enforcement injuries were reported.

A second suspect, Jordan Gurke, 24, was arrested on felony charges at the time as well. Deputies say he was shot in the foot. Lee County Jail records show he was freed in late February.
