A man in Ohio has been arrested following a shooting that claimed the lives of his pregnant sister and her husband during a Labor Day party at a park, according to authorities.
Around 3 p.m. on Sept. 4, Jason Iverson, 29, went to Stafford Park in Maple Heights after finding out his sister, 30-year-old Mercedes Iverson, and her spouse, 31-year-old Norbert “Trea” Carter, would be there, WEWS reported.
After arriving, Iverson tried to fight his sister and her husband, but the couple decided to go to their car to avoid him, officials said.
Iverson, however, followed the two and confronted them in the parking lot. He shot into their vehicle, hitting and killing Mercedes, WEWS reported.
Carter was able to exit the car and he fled the parking lot, making his way to the bathroom at the park pavilion. Iverson followed him and allegedly shot and killed Carter in the bathroom, authorities said.
Iverson then left the scene, but police were able to capture him shortly afterwards, WEWS reported.
During the incident, a 13-year-old was grazed by a bullet. The teenager was treated and released from a local hospital, officials said.
Maple Heights Police Chief Todd Hansen noted investigators don’t believe the boy was targeted, according to WJW.
“This incident was specifically between the shooter and the victims; there was no randomness to the event,” Hansen said. “The scene was rendered safe very quickly with the apprehension of the shooter.”
Officials said the shooting stemmed from a “longstanding feud” between the family members and Iverson was charged with murder and attempted murder.
Hansen said Mercedes’ baby did not survive the shooting. No details were given on how far along she was in her pregnancy.
So, the shooter killed three persons, and thus also did himself a serious harm, since he has the courts to answer to.
