Public safety officers at the University of Southern California are searching for a Lyft driver who allegedly sexually assaulted a student outside her apartment.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. Wednesday when the student was headed home from a club in West Hollywood, KABC-TV reported.
USC students received a crime notice about the alleged attack and were asked to stay vigilant in the days ahead.
Some said they’d look for alternative modes of transportation or walk with friends in order to navigate the sprawling city, rather than taking a ride-share.
“It just caught me by surprise,” USC junior Lisa Eidum told KABC. “Typically I’m already scared of Lyfts. I will walk as my first choice. So hearing that made me a little scared, because it (reinforced) my fears of taking Lyft. Definitely induces some anxiety.”
Police said the suspect was driving a black sedan. He is described as a slender man between 25- and 35-years-old with a black beard and black hair.
Police haven’t announced whether the driver was a legitimate Lyft contractor or was only posing as one.
Lyft did not immediately comment when reached by several local news outlets.
Last month, the San Diego Police Department said it was investigating a pair of similar sexual assaults involving supposed ride-share drivers who allegedly attacked San Diego State University students in August and September.
Experts warn that about half of all college sexual assaults occur in the “red zone,” the period between the first day of school and Thanksgiving break, when predators target new students who may still be unfamiliar with their surroundings.
