A Texas man traveled 250 miles to murder his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in 2020, but ended up fatally shooting the wrong man.
Kendell Morris, who is now 26 years old, drove from Houston to Arlington on May 4, 2020, and mistakenly shot Robert Cooley III, 24, when he was targeting his ex’s boyfriend, FOX News reported.
Morris showed up at the parking lot of the Bardin Greene Apartments looking for a Black man with dreadlocks because that is the only description he had of the new boyfriend, according to the Arlington Police, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
He never met the man he was targeting.
A witness told the police that Morris showed up at the apartment complex wanting to fight a person who he argued with on the phone, CBS News reported in 2020.
Morris reportedly had “adversarial conversations” over the phone with the man who is dating his ex, who is also the mother of his child, before the shooting.
He then drove to Arlington with a friend to kill the man.
Cooley was later found dead lying face down with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. An AR-15 rifle was found inside Morris’ car, according to the arrest warrant. A trooper from the Texas Department of Public Safety arrested Morris.
Morris was sentenced Wednesday to 27 years in prison for murdering Cooley, according to the Criminal District Attorney Phil Sorrells.
A murder charge against Morris’ friend was recently dismissed, according to court records.

I thought Texas gave the death penalty for murder.
