A mother in New York is facing child endangerment charges after her 2-year-old son was discovered caged in their home.

New York State Police said in a press release on Thursday, May 16, that Naesha Lumpkin, 24, was arrested after her son was found living in deplorable conditions and with bruises on his body.

Troopers discovered the child after they executed a felony arrest warrant for Lumpkin at her home in Buffalo, New York on February 8 for a separate charge.

When they arrived at the home to arrest her, they found her 2-year-old son located in a separate bedroom inside a “makeshift cage” made out of a “playpen that was covered by a piece of a crib tied down on three sides to the top.” The release noted that there wasn’t enough room in the cage for the child to “stand or exit the playpen.”

Police shared a photo of the tiny cage, which showed the pieces of gray crib tied together. Trash and “fecal matter” were strewn around the cage, per the police report, which added that fecal matter was also smeared on the wall next to it.

“There was remains of food inside there. Bones from chicken wings. Bones or some sort of chicken bones. So I mean, it was something where you look at it and it was disgusting,” Trooper James O’Callaghan told WKBW-TV of the scene.

Police noted in the report that the toddler and cage were covered in “human fecal matter,” and that the child and bedding were also “soaked in urine and fecal matter.”

“There were some excuses as to why the child was in that cage like that. None of them were good reasons,” O’Callaghan added. “And let’s be honest with you, anyone that has kids or anyone that has seen this picture knows that there is no reason for a child to be not only living like that.”

Investigators at the scene called Erie County Child Protective Services and an AMR ambulance to the home to provide medical aid to the child. The toddler was then transported to Oishei’s Children’s Hospital to receive treatment, according to the State Police.

During a medical evaluation at the hospital, medical staff noted that the 2-year-old had “bruising on his face and body,” according to the release. The child was also found to have “two fractured ribs” that were healing, placing the injury between ten days to two weeks before the child arrived at the hospital, police said.

Investigators interviewed Lumpkin about the child’s injuries and she allegedly told them that the boy “fell down the stairs sometime late December 2023, early January 2024.” She also said, per police, that the child had been “crying as a result of the incident,” but she “did not seek professional medical assistance.”

Lumpkin is scheduled to appear in court next month, according to WKBW-TV.

  1. It’s about time for our government to develop a program that prevents women from giving birth after they find severe incompetence or mental snd physicsl inability to properly love responsibly and care for s child. If not, we will continue to bring helpless babies into a horrific life of neglect and abuse.
This particular woman should be incarcerated and put in a similar cage for the some amount of time that she feels like a caged animal suffering abuse.
    State trooper was right.
    DISGUSTING in every way.

  2. That woman should have that poor innocent child taken from her, never to see him again. If CPS doesn’t do its job, the next time they will probably find his poor little body. If that does happen God forbid, they will be complicit in the crime. We can’t have another innocent baby murdered!
