A Connecticut community is in shock after a horrifying act of domestic violence left a 12-year-old boy dead and his teenage sister injured. Authorities say 52-year-old Anthony Andrew Esposito Jr. used a baseball bat to kill his young son and allegedly attempted to murder his 16-year-old daughter.
The brutal attack unfolded Thursday inside a home in Branford. Police identified the young victim as Anthony P. Esposito. According to prosecutors, the father confessed to “brutally” beating his son because the child had been “disrespectful.”
Esposito Jr. was apprehended following a traffic stop, thanks to assistance from the Connecticut State Police. He was charged with murder with special circumstances—a charge that could carry life without parole—and criminal attempt to commit murder for the alleged assault on his daughter.
During his arraignment Friday at New Haven Superior Court, prosecutors revealed that Esposito Jr. admitted he tried to push his daughter down the stairs and told investigators that had he reached the baseball bat again, he would have killed her too.
His public defender described a long history of mental health issues, citing psychiatric hospitalizations dating back to childhood and reports that Esposito Jr. claimed to be hearing voices.
Despite pleas from the defense to lower bail, the judge held firm on a $3 million bond. Esposito remains behind bars.
Branford police and school officials are now focused on supporting the devastated local community. Grief counselors have been deployed, and the school district is holding sessions at a local middle school for students, staff, and families.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our community, and our hearts are with Anthony’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers,” Branford Police said in a statement.
Branford Public Schools Superintendent Christopher Tranberg added, “Our deepest condolences go out to all those impacted by this unimaginable tragedy. Our hearts are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
