A woman is behind bars after allegedly beating a man with a bat and leaving him in the middle of a road, where he was fatally struck by oncoming traffic.
Tonnisha O. Mitchell, 43, has been charged with second-degree battery and manslaughter in the death of 42-year-old Gene Hill Jr., according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say it all started the night of May 23 in Lake Charles, when officers responded to a call about a fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision on Opelousas Street. But what at first looked like a tragic accident quickly turned into a much darker investigation.
Witnesses told police that Hill and Mitchell were in a car together and got into a heated argument. Both exited the vehicle, and things turned violent. According to the sheriff’s office, Mitchell armed herself with a bat and struck Hill multiple times in the head and body, leaving him crumpled on the pavement.
Instead of calling for help, Mitchell allegedly got back into her car and drove away.
One witness reported that Hill was badly injured and unable to move out of the road. Moments later, he was hit by two vehicles and killed.
Mitchell didn’t just flee the scene — investigators say she also tried to destroy and discard evidence at multiple locations in an attempt to cover her tracks. But the efforts didn’t work. Officers tracked her down at her home two days later and took her into custody.
Mitchell is currently being held at the Calcasieu Correctional Center. Her bond has not yet been set.
