A quiet British town was rocked by horror last summer when a 71-year-old woman was murdered at the grave of her son—exactly 20 years after he was buried there.

Martin Suter, 68, has pleaded guilty to killing his ex-wife, Ann Blackwood, on July 24, 2023, at Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington. The shocking crime occurred on the 20th anniversary of the burial of their teenage son, Christopher, who died at age 16 in 2003.

The case had been under a strict reporting ban, but that restriction was recently lifted, according to The Portsmouth News. The local outlet also revealed that Suter, a former Green Party political candidate, was arrested just days after the murder and charged shortly thereafter.

Blackwood was pronounced dead at the cemetery, a peaceful neighborhood spot that residents described as “the last place you’d expect something so horrific to happen.”

Her devastated family described her as a vibrant, kind-hearted woman who had been thriving in retirement. “A loving, caring, kind-hearted mother and friend who was very popular in her local community,” they said in a statement shared by police. “She was enjoying her retirement with an active lifestyle which included tennis, sailing, cycling and music.”

Court officials have yet to issue a comment on the case, but Suter’s guilty plea adds a disturbing final chapter to a family story already marred by tragedy.
