A terrifying incident aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has left one crew member dead and another hospitalized after what officials are calling a violent personal dispute turned deadly.

According to multiple reports, a 35-year-old South African man allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old female crew member—also from South Africa—multiple times before jumping overboard on Tuesday, July 24, as the ship sailed near the Bahamas.

Passengers captured the aftermath on video, with clips posted to TikTok showing crowds gathered at the ship’s edge watching rescue efforts unfold in the water below. In one video, someone can be heard pointing out the man in the sea. Another clip shows a motionless man surrounded by emergency responders on a rescue boat being lifted back onboard.

Authorities say the man was pulled from the water unresponsive and later pronounced dead by medical staff. His identity has not been publicly released. An autopsy is underway to determine his exact cause of death.

The woman survived the attack and was treated for stab wounds to her upper body. She is currently in stable condition, according to WTVJ.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean confirmed the disturbing series of events: “Our onboard security team responded to an incident involving two crew members in a personal dispute. One of the crew members was injured and attended to by the onboard medical team. She is now in stable condition. Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.”

The shocking altercation happened as the ship was en route to the popular island destination of CocoCay around 7:00 p.m. local time. Life preservers were thrown into the water to mark the man’s location before rescue boats were launched.

This tragedy marks a dark chapter for Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, which made headlines earlier this year for its record-breaking size and luxury features. But on this day, all of that was overshadowed by a violent and tragic event no one saw coming.

Authorities in the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean are continuing their investigations.
