Boy rushed into surgery with severe leg injuries after horrifying crash; staff member also hospitalized

A quiet afternoon outside a Pittsburgh school turned into chaos when a 12-year-old boy and a staff member were struck by a car in what officials believe may have been a drunk-driving incident.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, near Westinghouse Academy in the city’s Homewood West neighborhood. Witnesses said it was over in seconds.

“It happened so quick,” one bystander told WPXI. “The kids didn’t even get a chance to move.”

Authorities say the driver’s car jumped the curb after making a turn onto Monticello Street — slamming into the two victims and pinning them against a wall.

The boy suffered traumatic injuries to his lower body and was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital, where doctors immediately performed surgery. Officials later said he had lost a significant amount of blood but was beginning to stabilize.

The woman, identified as a one-on-one classroom assistant, was hospitalized in stable condition.

“They were simply standing waiting for transportation,” Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Wayne Walters said, adding that the district’s “thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with that student and that staff member.”

Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Emily Bourne said the crash caused “quite significant traumatic injuries” to the child, and confirmed that alcohol may have played a role.

“There is a potential, a probability that alcohol was a factor,” Bourne told WTAE. “Charges are expected in this case.”

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, who are reviewing camera footage and witness statements as part of the ongoing investigation.

  1. Want Justice???
You won’t get it through the criminal justice system.
Better hire a private attorney and start working on the lawsuits!!
