A New York man has been convicted of brutally murdering a social worker after she accidentally knocked on the wrong door during a home visit.
Hasseem Jenkins was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Westchester District Attorney’s Office.
The horrific attack happened on May 14, 2024, when 56-year-old social worker Maria Coto was conducting a site visit in Peekskill, New York. Prosecutors said Jenkins “repeatedly punched Coto in the face, chased her into a neighbor’s apartment, and kicked her in the head multiple times while wearing heavy boots.”
Coto suffered severe head trauma, including a brain bleed and swelling, and died in the hospital five weeks later.
“Maria Coto’s life was cut short on May 14, 2024,” District Attorney Susan Cacace said in a statement. “As proved during a multi-week trial, Hasseem Jenkins beat her until the nerves in her brain stem were severed beyond repair, hurling repeated epithets as she lay dying on the floor.”
Coto was remembered as a compassionate and dedicated woman who spent her life helping others. “Maria devoted her brief time on Earth to helping others,” Cacace continued. “She was a petite woman with an uncommonly generous spirit. She will live on in all the lives she touched.”
According to CBS News, Coto had been visiting an apartment building when she mistakenly knocked on Jenkins’ door. Prosecutors said Jenkins was high on PCP at the time of the attack.
Jenkins is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
