A tragic road rage incident in Nevada has left an 11-year-old boy dead after he was shot while his stepfather was driving him to school.
At a press conference on Friday, Nov. 14, the Henderson Police Department explained that the shooting happened around 7:30 a.m., when two drivers got into a verbal exchange after one vehicle tried to pass the other on the shoulder of the road. Police say the confrontation escalated when the driver of the passing vehicle — identified as 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns — fired a single shot into the other car. The bullet struck the boy, who was sitting in the back seat.
According to investigators, the boy’s stepfather then rammed the suspect’s vehicle, forcing both cars to stop in the middle of the freeway. The two men got out and continued arguing until someone flagged down a police officer, who detained the suspect. Emergency crews rushed the child to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts from medical staff, he died from his injuries.
Homicide detectives arrested Johns on charges of open murder and firing a gun into an occupied vehicle. Jail records show he is being held at the Henderson Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Henderson Police Department called the shooting a senseless act and urged drivers to slow down and stay patient, especially heading into the holiday season when dangerous driving tends to increase. “Tragedies like this are preventable,” the department wrote.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Henderson Police.
