A heartbreaking accident in eastern Louisiana claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy as he waited for the school bus.

Authorities say the boy, identified as Carson Lawson, was struck and killed by his grandmother’s SUV in Slidell, about 30 miles northeast of New Orleans. Kristen Anders, 55, has been charged with vehicular homicide. Investigators believe she was impaired at the time of the tragedy.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. Monday on Spartan Loop. Carson was in the driveway waiting for his bus when Anders, driving a 2016 GMC Yukon, accidentally hit him. Police say the child may have been sitting in front of the SUV when Anders drove forward, killing him instantly.

Officials noted that Anders was headed to work and was unaware Carson was outside. She stopped the vehicle after realizing she had struck something. Officers at the scene reported that she showed signs of impairment, and tests later confirmed she was under the influence of alcohol and central nervous system depressants.

Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau described the situation as “very tragic,” emphasizing that it’s not only a child’s death but also involves a family member. “It’s very safe to say she did not know the boy was in front of her vehicle,” he said.

The chief added, “This is any parent’s worst nightmare. It affects all of us—everyone with children or grandchildren, and first responders who were there. Witnessing this… it’s hard for all of us.”

Neighbors called 911 after hearing screams and cries for help. Carson was later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident.
