A mother and son were found mummified inside a Brooklyn apartment on Wednesday, after neighbors reported a foul smell coming from the building for days.

Officers conducted a wellness check just before 1 p.m. at the Downtown Brooklyn apartment on the corner of Jay Street and Tillary Street, where they discovered the 80-year-old woman and her 52-year-old son unresponsive. Sources say their bodies appeared to have been mummified. EMS pronounced them dead at the scene.

The bodies were removed from the apartment by around 7:35 p.m.

“That’s actually nasty. I can smell it as soon as I walk out of the elevator. Almost taste it,” one police officer exiting the building told reporters, describing the horrific stench.

Neighbors said the smell had been noticeable for days. “It would come in waves, and the maintenance would spray like an air freshener,” one neighbor recalled. “I just thought it was coming from the trash outside, but it got worse.”

The son reportedly lived nearby but often came to care for his mother, according to the building’s doorman. “I haven’t seen him for maybe two or three weeks,” he said.

Authorities said there was no visible trauma to the bodies, the case is still under investigation.
