A Kansas woman was tragically shot and killed on her front porch in the early hours of November 1, just days before her 21st birthday, after her boyfriend allegedly bombarded her with 18 calls in just two minutes over a Halloween party she attended against his wishes.
Police say 20-year-old Ana Juarez of Kansas City was shot in the lower back around 4:30 a.m. on the 700 block of North 11th Street and later died at a nearby hospital. Her boyfriend, 22-year-old Kevin Calamaco-Morales, has been charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm.
According to court documents, Juarez had been at a Halloween party when Calamaco-Morales allegedly began relentlessly calling and messaging her. Witnesses described the relationship as controlling and toxic, with Calamaco-Morales reportedly dictating where Juarez could go and what she could do.
Police say he arrived at the home where Juarez was partying, approached the porch, and shot her as she walked through the front door. Multiple witnesses identified him as the shooter, and he was arrested later that day at his home.
Court documents reveal alarming messages sent to Juarez just before the shooting, including repeated questions about her whereabouts and threats implying serious consequences if she didn’t comply with his demands.
A friend of the suspect told police she believes Calamaco-Morales is the shooter and noted his prior aggressive behavior, including handling firearms.
Calamaco-Morales is currently in jail with a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court on December 16 as authorities continue their investigation.
