Five young children in Arizona are facing the holidays without their mother after a tragic murder-suicide that unfolded in Phoenix just days before Christmas.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, 30-year-old Selena Felix was found dead outside her home around 3:30 a.m. on December 22. Officers say the young mother had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
As detectives began canvassing the area, they identified a suspicious vehicle and ran the license plate — only to learn the driver had been stopped by police about an hour earlier during a traffic stop.
Police say the driver, 23-year-old Alexis Torres, fled the vehicle during that stop and barricaded himself inside a nearby home. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for some time, but during the standoff they heard a single gunshot.
Torres was later found dead inside the home from what investigators say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
During the investigation, officers also discovered a 3-year-old child inside Torres’ vehicle. It took another hour for authorities to link Torres to Felix’s killing — and nearly three more hours before they identified the toddler, after a family member reported the child missing from Felix’s home.
Investigators now believe Torres took the child from Felix late on December 21 and killed his ex-partner as part of an ongoing custody dispute. Court records indicate Torres was not the child’s biological father.
Felix’s family has since remembered her as a devoted mother and a loving presence in their lives. In a GoFundMe campaign created in her memory, relatives described her as “a loving mother, a caring sister, and a friend to many,” adding that her five children are “struggling to understand why their mother is no longer with them.”
Police say the investigation remains ongoing as the community grapples with yet another devastating act of domestic violence during what is meant to be a season of joy.
