A disturbing case out of Texas is raising serious questions after a mother was accused of putting her own child through unnecessary medical procedures — all while claiming he was gravely ill.
Authorities say 31-year-old Kaitlyn Laura was arrested on March 19 and is now facing multiple charges, including injury to a child causing serious bodily injury — a first-degree felony — and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, Laura is accused of subjecting her 3-year-old son to what investigators describe as ongoing medical abuse.
She was released from jail on March 29 after posting a $75,000 bond.
Prosecutors allege Laura told doctors her young son suffered from serious conditions, including cerebral palsy, claiming he couldn’t walk or eat on his own. But investigators say those claims didn’t match reality.
Medical staff reportedly became suspicious after repeatedly seeing the child eat normally and attempt to stand — even as his mother insisted he needed a feeding tube and a wheelchair.
Despite those concerns, the boy underwent a feeding tube procedure in May and, according to authorities, endured multiple unnecessary treatments and surgeries over the course of a year.
Doctors eventually flagged the case, and Child Protective Services was first notified in June 2025 after medical professionals concluded the child’s supposed conditions were either exaggerated or entirely false.
The case was later escalated to prosecutors.
Concerns resurfaced again in October 2025 when a teacher reported that the child was eating solid food and moving around independently at school — contradicting the mother’s claims. Shortly after, Laura allegedly pulled him out of school.
In January, the child underwent another invasive procedure to replace his feeding tube. Then in February, Laura allegedly pushed for him to be hospitalized again, claiming complications and requesting he be placed in a specialized enclosed hospital bed.
Days later, on February 14, the boy was removed from her custody and placed into foster care.
Investigators also say Laura gave conflicting accounts about her son’s birth and medical history, further raising red flags. On top of that, authorities claim she set up multiple online fundraisers seeking money for his supposed medical needs.
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn didn’t hold back when addressing the case.
“This child is being tortured,” he said, pointing to the physical scars left behind from surgeries that may not have been necessary. “He’s going to grow up asking why those scars are there.”
Officials say there is now a separate investigation into potential Medicaid fraud tied to the alleged unnecessary treatments.
Authorities are also asking anyone who donated money or communicated with Laura about her son’s condition to come forward as the investigation continues.
