An Indiana sheriff’s deputy has been jailed after authorities say he carried out a vicious off-duty domestic violence attack that left a woman badly injured — including allegations that he bit, beat, and threatened to kill her.
Tyler Wood, 27, is facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated battery causing a risk of death, domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and strangulation, according to the Muncie Police Department.
The violent incident unfolded Wednesday at a home on North Allison Road in Muncie, a city about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
Police say they were dispatched to the residence after receiving a domestic violence call. When officers arrived, they found a woman bleeding from her forehead. Court documents indicate that during the 911 call, dispatchers could hear a man in the background saying, “You’re bleeding all over the apartment.”
Wood was detained at the scene, and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities say she suffered injuries to her head, arms, and legs caused by punches, kicks, and bites.
Investigators say the situation escalated even further after the assault. According to law enforcement, the woman told officers that Wood went upstairs and began shouting about plans to kill her, prompting her to call 911 out of fear for her life.
Following the arrest, Blackford County Sheriff James “Jim” Heflin confirmed that Wood was employed as a deputy with the Blackford County Sheriff’s Office and had served there for more than three years.
In a statement, Heflin said the sheriff’s office was notified of the off-duty incident on Dec. 30, 2025, and immediately launched an internal investigation. Wood was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome.
“Allegations involving violence are treated with the utmost seriousness,” Heflin said, adding that any conduct violating the law or departmental standards would be addressed through both legal and administrative channels.
Wood is currently being held without bond at the Delaware County Jail.
As of now, jail records list only the aggravated battery charge, though prosecutors have requested until Jan. 7 to formally file all charges. Court records also show Wood is scheduled to appear before a judge that same day for a firearm seizure hearing.
The criminal case remains ongoing.
