A Florida man has been arrested following the discovery of a woman’s body on a busy South Florida beach, a case that quickly sparked fears of foul play.
Police say 28-year-old Brandon McCray was taken into custody on Dec. 30, 2025, after a multi-agency investigation into the death of 56-year-old Heather Asendorf. Her body was found early the morning of Dec. 26 on Hollywood Beach.
According to local reports, officers responded to a call around 7 a.m. about a deceased woman on the beach. Asendorf, a Pennsylvania native who frequently spent time in Hollywood, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Days later, the Hollywood Police Department announced McCray’s arrest in connection with the investigation. Authorities stressed that McCray has not yet been formally charged with Asendorf’s death.
Court records show McCray is currently facing two counts of armed sexual battery, along with charges of kidnapping and battery by strangulation. Police indicated that additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Investigators worked alongside the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate McCray, who was arrested at his home without incident. He made his first court appearance on Dec. 31.
Witnesses described a disturbing scene on the beach. One person told a local NBC affiliate that Asendorf’s body was found wrapped in a white blanket. Another witness reported seeing what appeared to be a blood trail leading away from where the body was discovered.
Police have not said whether Asendorf and McCray knew each other prior to her death.
McCray is currently being held at the Broward County Jail on $770,000 bond. His next court date has not yet been announced as the investigation remains ongoing.
