A Louisiana community is reeling after a 9-year-old boy was allegedly shot by a friend in what police now believe was an intentional act.

The child, identified by local outlet KALB as Tre’Michael, was spending time with a 10-year-old friend in Alexandria on December 6 when the shooting happened, according to a statement from the Alexandria Police Department.

Tre’Michael was rushed to the hospital, where his mother, Lakisha Ledguies, said her son made a chilling claim once he was able to speak.

“When the tube first came out of his mouth and he was able to talk, the first words were, ‘Mama, Mama, he shot me on purpose,’” she told KALB.

Police initially believed the shooting was accidental. After further investigation, however, authorities said they now believe it was intentional, according to KALB, citing police officials.

The 10-year-old boy involved was arrested on suspicion of aggravated second-degree battery and juvenile possession of a handgun. Because he is a minor, his identity has not been released. It remains unclear how the child obtained the firearm or whether additional charges will be filed against anyone else.

Tre’Michael’s injuries were severe. A family member later shared heartbreaking details on a GoFundMe created to support the boy during his recovery, describing the process as “an unimaginable journey.”

According to the fundraiser, Tre’Michael lost his right kidney, half of his left lung, and suffered extensive internal damage after the bullet shattered his intestines.

“Our family is still in shock,” the family member wrote. “Every day brings new challenges as he fights to recover from this traumatic event.”

Despite the devastation, the family expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received from the community.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support,” they wrote. “Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can express.”

As of Sunday, January 11, the Alexandria Police Department had not responded to requests for additional comment, and the investigation remains ongoing.
