A routine subway ride in the Bronx turned violent last week after an elderly man was pepper-sprayed in the face during a brief confrontation over an accidental bump, according to police.
Authorities say the incident happened around 2:50 p.m. on Jan. 7 aboard a northbound No. 5 train as it pulled into the East 180th Street station. The 70-year-old victim and another passenger reportedly bumped into each other by accident — but the situation quickly escalated.
Police say the woman became enraged and suddenly sprayed pepper spray directly into the man’s face. Photos released by the New York City Police Department show the suspect wearing large glasses, headphones over a black beanie, and dark clothing.
The senior suffered pain and redness from the spray but declined medical treatment at the scene. The suspect fled the train and has not yet been arrested.
The NYPD later released images of the woman and described her as having a dark complexion, approximately 5-foot-2, and weighing about 180 pounds. At the time of the attack, she was reportedly wearing a navy-blue jacket, black sweater, blue pants, and a black hat.
Investigators say the attack stemmed solely from the accidental bump and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
