A routine Monday morning commute turned violent in Harlem, NYC when a 14-year-old boy allegedly stabbed an elderly panhandler on a subway platform after being asked for spare change, police and law enforcement sources said.
The incident unfolded around 8:40 a.m. on the No. 2 train platform at the 125th Street–Lenox Avenue station. Authorities say the 65-year-old man approached the teen and asked him for money during the height of the rush hour crowd.
Instead of walking away, the teen allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the stomach, according to police sources.
Emergency responders rushed the wounded victim to Harlem Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Officers arrested the teen at the scene and recovered the knife, authorities said.
The teen has been charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The stabbing came less than an hour after another violent incident on public transit in the Bronx. Around 7:50 a.m., a 39-year-old woman was slashed in the face while riding an MTA Bx4 bus near Westchester and Rosedale avenues in the Parkchester neighborhood.
Police said the woman got into an argument with another female passenger, who allegedly pulled a knife and attacked her before fleeing on foot. The suspect was last seen wearing all black.
The injured woman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she was also listed in stable condition.
Both incidents remain under investigation as police continue searching for the bus attacker and reviewing surveillance footage from the subway station.
What is going ON with the world today, especially with the youth and our society? Who or what is teaching these kids to have no kind of critical thinking, no kind of right and wrong, or restraint, or simply “walk away” or even better, if you can, be kind to someone else? Even a simple “sorry, I can’t help you” would have been a much better response? Where are they learning and thinking and understanding that this kind of re/action, this kind of response and entitlement and whatever all else is acceptable and proper? Where are the lessons in morals? In decency? In humanity? This child was 14 years old – well old enough to understand right/wrong, consequences and especially the escalation of such a simple act into a potentially fatal one. And those that think what this kid did was ok/justified …. also need some serious help.
