What started as a simple delivery mistake turned into a life-altering nightmare for one driver — and now, a New York man has been found guilty after opening fire.
John Reilly, 49, a local highway superintendent in Orange County, was convicted in connection with the May 2, 2025 shooting of 24-year-old DoorDash driver Alpha Barry. The verdict came on March 26 after a trial that revealed disturbing details about the encounter.
Reilly faced more than a dozen felony charges and was found guilty on nearly all counts, including first-degree assault with depraved indifference, second-degree assault, and nine felony weapons charges. He was acquitted of attempted murder.
Prosecutors say Barry was simply trying to do his job.
On the night of the shooting, the driver became lost in a Chester neighborhood after his phone battery died. Hoping to complete the delivery, he approached Reilly’s home and asked if he had placed the order.
Reilly told him to leave — and Barry did.
But that wasn’t the end.
As Barry drove away, authorities say Reilly came back outside armed with a .45 caliber Glock and began firing. After shooting once into his own lawn, he allegedly turned the gun on Barry’s vehicle, unleashing multiple rounds.
One bullet tore through the car door and struck Barry in the lower back.
The injuries were catastrophic.
Barry was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors were forced to remove two feet of his small intestine to save his life.
The entire incident was captured on surveillance video from Reilly’s own home, adding a chilling layer to the case.
Prosecutors also allege Reilly’s wife, Selina Nelson-Reilly, tried to cover up the shooting by deleting 17 videos from their doorbell camera. She is now facing her own charges for hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence, with her next court date set for April 10.
Reilly had been out on bail before the trial but was taken into custody after the verdict. He is being held until sentencing on May 18, where he could face up to 25 years behind bars.
