A Long Island man is accused of unleashing a horrifying attack on his own mother during a violent argument that left the elderly woman unconscious and hospitalized.
John Strano, 37, has been charged with attempted murder and multiple assault-related offenses following the disturbing incident inside a home in Williston Park, New York, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Authorities say the chaos erupted around 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday when Strano and his 75-year-old mother got into an argument that quickly turned physical.
Police allege Strano shoved his mother to the ground and repeatedly slammed her head against the floor before punching her in the face over and over again. The attack didn’t stop there.
Investigators say he then choked her and struck her with a blunt metal object. Prosecutors later revealed in court that the weapon was allegedly a metal clamp used to hit the victim in the back of her head.
Even more chilling were the words he’s accused of yelling during the assault.
According to reports, Strano screamed, “Why are you still breathing?” and “Why aren’t you dying?” as he attacked her.
The victim lost consciousness during the ordeal and suffered serious injuries, including swelling and cuts to her face and head. She was rushed to the hospital, where she is now listed in stable condition.
After the attack, police say Strano fled the home but didn’t get far. Officers located him nearby and took him into custody. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation before being formally charged.
Strano has since pleaded not guilty, according to local reports.
The investigation remains ongoing.
