A terrifying kidnapping attempt in Michigan turned into a powerful moment of bravery — all thanks to a gas station clerk who refused to ignore his instincts.

The incident unfolded Monday morning in Hamtramck when a 16-year-old girl was allegedly abducted while walking to school. Police quickly responded to reports of the kidnapping and began searching for the suspect.

About 30 minutes later, the situation took a dramatic turn.

According to reports, the suspect brought the teen into a gas station in Detroit to buy cigarettes — and that’s when everything changed.

Clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem immediately sensed something wasn’t right. As the suspect told the girl to pay, she silently mouthed one word to him: “Help.”

That was all he needed.

Without hesitation, Abohatem stepped out from behind the protective glass, confronted the suspect, and forced him out of the store. He then helped the terrified teen get to safety as police rushed to the scene.

Officers arrived just in time, and Abohatem pointed directly at the suspect. He was taken into custody on the spot.

Authorities later identified the man as 48-year-old Donald J. Fields of Detroit. He is now facing multiple serious charges, including kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct, firearm possession, and assault. Officials also confirmed a weapon was recovered.

Meanwhile, the teen — a student at Frontier International Academy — is safe and back with her family, recovering after the terrifying ordeal.

Incredibly, the rescue effort didn’t stop at the gas station. Other students who witnessed the initial abduction reportedly used their phones and social media to help track the situation in real time, giving police critical information.

Community leaders have since praised everyone involved — but especially Abohatem, whose quick thinking may have saved a life.

“I feel good when you save somebody,” he said. “Sixteen years old — she is a child.”
