A trip to the mall turned violent in an instant after a man allegedly stabbed a teenage girl during a heated confrontation that started over insults.
Angel Ortiz, 23, is now facing a list of serious charges, including aggravated assault, after the shocking incident inside Willow Grove Park Mall in Abington Township, Pennsylvania—just outside Philadelphia. He’s currently being held on $50,000 bail.
According to police, it all unfolded around 2 p.m. on Wednesday when a group of teenage girls were riding down an escalator. Ortiz was standing right behind them when things took a sudden turn.
One of the girls reportedly joked that someone smelled, then turned and accused Ortiz of being the source. That’s when tensions exploded.
Investigators say Ortiz became visibly angry and began yelling at the teens. At one point, he allegedly taunted the girl, repeatedly saying, “Why don’t you hit me?”
Surveillance footage later showed Ortiz walking away—but the situation didn’t end there. Police say the 14-year-old followed him and appeared to strike him in the head.
That’s when things escalated into violence.
Authorities say Ortiz swung back with a knife in his hand, leaving the teen with cuts on both of her arms. He later told police he didn’t intend to stab her, claiming he was only trying to get her to back off—but the damage was already done.
Officers rushed to the mall shortly before 2:30 p.m. after reports of a stabbing. The girl was found with multiple lacerations and taken to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police quickly tracked down Ortiz nearby. According to investigators, he told them he had gone to a nearby Chipotle to “cool off” and wait for a bus after the confrontation. When officers arrested him, they reportedly found two pocket knives in his possession.
Authorities also confirmed that Ortiz and the teen did not know each other before the incident.
He appeared in court for a preliminary arraignment and is scheduled to return for a hearing on April 29, as the case continues to unfold.

He should have never stabbed her but if she truly hit him in the head, that’s an assault. He’ll probably get off with a lighter sentence.
