A shocking case out of Philadelphia has left a community shaken after a teenage girl was charged in the death of her newborn baby.
Prosecutors say the unidentified teen is facing multiple charges following an incident on April 25 in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia.
According to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, the baby was born at home and allegedly killed shortly after birth.
Preliminary autopsy findings suggest the newborn—identified as a baby girl—may have suffered puncture wounds, though the official cause of death has not yet been determined.
The teen is now charged with voluntary manslaughter, possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person, and tampering with physical evidence.
District Attorney Larry Krasner said the case is still unfolding and that key questions remain—especially regarding the teen’s mental state before and after giving birth.
“What is clear now is that this heartbreaking incident constitutes criminal homicide,” Krasner said, adding that investigators are awaiting additional medical and expert reports.
Officials say the charges could change as more information comes to light.
Authorities also confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that support services are being offered to those impacted by the case.
For now, many details remain unclear, as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened in the moments after the child was born.
