A quiet Kentucky town is reeling after a deadly bank shooting left two employees dead—and a massive manhunt that followed ended with a suspect now in custody.

The violence unfolded around 2 p.m. on April 30 at a U.S. Bank branch in Berea, when a masked gunman opened fire on two workers inside before taking off on foot.

By the time authorities arrived, both victims—a man and a woman—had been fatally shot. Their identities have not yet been released.

What followed was an intense, multi-agency search effort. Kentucky State Police teamed up with Lexington Police Department and other agencies, going door to door, reviewing surveillance footage, and deploying helicopters and drones to track down the suspect.

Within hours, investigators released a description of the person they were hunting: a man about 6-foot-3, wearing a light-colored hoodie, gloves, gray pants, and athletic shoes. He was last seen running toward East Chestnut Street.

Schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution, with students only allowed to leave alongside a parent or guardian while the suspect remained at large.

Then came the breakthrough.

On May 1, police confirmed they had apprehended a person of interest believed to be tied to the shooting. Officials have not yet released full details about the arrest or whether anything was taken from the bank.

“This is a terrible day for Berea,” said state police spokesperson Scottie Pennington. “They’re our people that work in our community, and they’re no longer with us.”

In a statement, U.S. Bank said it is “deeply saddened” by the loss and is focused on supporting the victims’ families and employees impacted by the tragedy.
