Police in Illinois are searching for answers after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a car seat in a parking lot.

Officers in Collinsville responded to the scene on Sunday, June 7, after a caller reported finding a baby left alone in a parking lot at about 8:35 p.m., according to the Collinsville Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the infant asleep.

Police said the baby is believed to be between 1 week and 1 month old. He has been identified as a Hispanic male.

The infant was found secured in a green-and-black Evenflo car seat. He was wearing a striped onesie and a small hat at the time, police said.

Authorities said the baby appeared to be in good health, but he was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation as a precaution.

Investigators are now looking for both a suspect and a woman who may have recently given birth.

Witnesses told police they saw a Hispanic man driving in the parking lot less than an hour before the baby was discovered. Police said the man was driving an older-model navy blue car that was “extremely loud.”

Witnesses described the vehicle as sounding “like it was going to blow up,” according to police.

Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the baby, knows a Hispanic woman who was recently pregnant but is no longer carrying a child, or can identify a Hispanic man driving an extremely loud older-model navy blue car to contact investigators.

As of Friday afternoon, police had not announced any major update in the case.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Josh Fields at 618-344-2131 ext. 5297.
