A New York couple is being mourned after police say they were fatally shot by their own son in an apparent murder-suicide just days after they reportedly helped get him out of jail.
Steve Sislo and Donna Walker-Sislo were found dead inside their home in Madison, New York, on Friday, Aug. 7, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Their 35-year-old son, Justin Sislo, was also found dead inside the residence.
Authorities said all three had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and investigators believe Justin killed his parents before taking his own life.
The deaths came shortly after Justin had been released from jail following an earlier arrest.
Court records show Justin was arrested on July 1 on a strangulation charge stemming from an alleged incident the previous month.
His parents reportedly paid $10,000 to bail him out of jail just days before the deadly shooting.
The case has also renewed attention on concerns former classmates had raised about Justin years earlier.
In December 2023, one former classmate posted online that nobody appeared to have heard from him in years. Several others responded that they had wondered the same thing.
After news of the deaths emerged, some of those former classmates expressed shock over what authorities say happened.
Steve and Donna were also remembered as active and generous members of their local community.
Steve was a longtime supporter of the Capitol Arts Complex in Rome, a well-known cultural center in the area.
Art Pierce, executive director of the complex, remembered Steve as “one of the guys who was a real pillar of the community.”
“He was particularly involved in the military bands, sponsoring them,” Pierce told the Rome Sentinel. “He was the guy who was instrumental in bringing them in.”
The shocking deaths have left friends and community members mourning a couple who were known for supporting local arts and community organizations while investigators continue piecing together the events leading up to the apparent murder-suicide.
