A New Jersey woman has been charged months after a Memorial Day boating crash that killed her 28-year-old son and injured several other people.
Jennifer L. Pearson, 59, is facing multiple charges in connection with the deadly May 25 crash in Barnegat Bay, according to New Jersey State Police.
Pearson has been charged with death by vessel, a second-degree offense, as well as operating a vessel under the influence, reckless operation of a vessel, operating without a Boating Safety Certificate and failing to have a proper lookout.
She voluntarily surrendered to New Jersey State Police at the Troop “C” Tuckerton Station on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on Memorial Day.
Police say Pearson was allegedly operating the boat when it struck a day marker in Barnegat Bay.
The impact threw two people from the vessel, including Pearson’s son, Gunnar Pearson.
Gunnar and another passenger were rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Gunnar later died from his injuries.
Four other people who had been on the boat were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.
Pearson was later released following a detention hearing on Friday, Aug. 21, according to NJ 101.5.
The outlet reported that Pearson works as a paralegal and substitute teacher.
Gunnar was remembered by loved ones as a kind, funny and deeply caring young man.
According to his obituary, he had recently finished renovating his first home in Forked River.
He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved skiing, fishing, boating, running and hunting.
“Gunnar will be remembered for his warm heart, his sense of humor, his loyalty, and the love he gave so freely to those around him,” his obituary said.
“His life, though far too short, was full of meaning, connection, and love.”
Pearson’s charges remain allegations, and the case is continuing through the court system.
