A North Carolina doctor was arrested over the weekend after authorities say a road rage incident on a Virginia interstate ended with gunfire and two sisters being shot.
The terrifying encounter happened shortly before 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, along Interstate 77 northbound in Carroll County, about three miles from the North Carolina-Virginia state line, according to Virginia State Police.
Investigators said the shooting followed an apparent road rage incident involving a Jeep and a Mercedes-Benz.
Police allege 61-year-old Richard Arriviello of Charlotte opened fire into the moving Jeep before fleeing the scene in his Mercedes.
Inside the Jeep were two sisters, ages 12 and 20.
Both were struck in the legs, according to state police.
The sisters were taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
After the shooting, authorities began searching for the Mercedes.
The vehicle was later stopped on Interstate 77 near Exit 19, where Arriviello was taken into custody.
He now faces multiple serious charges, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm with intent to maim and using a firearm while committing a felony.
The driver of the Jeep was also charged with reckless driving, police said.
Authorities have not publicly identified that driver.
According to the North Carolina Medical Board, Arriviello has been licensed as a physician in the state since 2010.
WBTV reported that he owns Family Urgent Care in Monroe, North Carolina.
The medical facility did not immediately comment on the arrest.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Arriviello remained behind bars at the New River Valley Regional Jail.
Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate exactly what led up to the confrontation and gunfire on the interstate.
